iDirect technology

iDirect hub

The iDirect hub is implemented in our Teleport in The Netherlands where it is used for services on various satellites covering Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and South America. The hub has the most advanced IP routing capability and application prioritization capabilities and it can support thousands of sites and multiple networks with various requirements for topologies and bandwidth. It provides efficiency in bandwidth utilization, via an IP routing system that prioritizes voice, data and video traffic. The key differentiators of iDirect over other platform technologies include:

  • Uplink efficiency: iDirect uplink efficiency can reach 98%. This is not possible with any of the other TDMA technologies present so far. Good efficiency basically means you get more bandwidth at the same cost and reliable service.
  • Superior Quality of Service (QoS): if you anticipate using other data, voice or videoconferencing applications bypassing the VPN tunnel, iDirect's QoS is superior to anything else out there. Prioritization of traffic is required to make sure it remains of business quality whenever the voice or video communication is required.
  • Lower Round Trip Time (RTT): lower RTT makes iDirect ideal for real time applications compared to other shared hub technologies. Typical RTT of iDirect is 650ms where other platforms reach typical RTT of 900ms.
  • Dedicated timeslot availability: when you require real-time traffic and need jitter less data transfer, iDirect provides you with true CIR because timeslots can be made dedicated in iDirect's D-TDMA mode while other VSAT systems can only emulate CIR as they need to contend with other terminals to request the timeslot.

The iDirect hub at our Teleport is directly connected to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange and Tier-1 European Internet providers providing the best possible Internet connection for our iDirect VSAT customers.

iDirect satellite router

The iDirect satellite router is a "single box" solution that includes a satellite modem, IP router, TCP acceleration over satellite, and QoS/prioritization in an easy to deploy, extremely reliable design. The compact terminal support all your IP applications, including VoIP and basic Video.

Power requirements

It is important to install UPS and a back-up generator to ensure broadband connectivity during power outages or load shedding. The UPS will keep the terminal on-line for a few minutes allowing the back-up power to kick in order for the terminal equipment to switch off in a normal way preventing system failures when the power is switched on again. The power requirements of an iDirect remote site is maximum 250W.
